About Global Hepatitis Solutions
Our Story
Global Hepatitis Solutions began as the Liberian National Hepatitis Foundation, founded in 2016 with one clear vision:
to eliminate hepatitis B from Liberia. The journey started long before the organization was born — with a personal tragedy.
In 2011, our founder, Layal Kazouh, lost her beloved sister to chronic hepatitis B. Misdiagnosed and misunderstood, her sister’s illness went untreated until it was too late. This loss became the spark for a lifelong mission. At the time, Layal was completing her graduate studies in Public Health with a focus in Epidemiology at Cuttington University. She chose to write her dissertation on hepatitis B — but when she began gathering data, she discovered an alarming reality: there was almost no data available.
The Ministry of Health had no records. Hospitals lacked statistics. Only the national blood bank showed any documentation. Meanwhile, across the country, people who were symptomatic assumed they had malaria. They self-medicated. They continued consuming alcohol. They unknowingly destroyed their own livers.
Hepatitis B was an invisible epidemic.
Layal decided to do something about it. She founded the organization to educate, to advocate, and to change the national conversation around hepatitis B.
Today, Global Hepatitis Solutions continues that mission beyond Liberia — promoting awareness, testing, prevention, and dignity for those affected by hepatitis.
Support Through Storytelling

In addition to advocacy and outreach, Layal is also a children’s author.
Her books, written to inspire curiosity and compassion, are a creative way to support hepatitis B awareness and prevention.
A portion of all book sales directly supports the organization’s mission — especially providing hepatitis B vaccines and educational outreach to underserved communities.
